Our next course starts in April 2026. Application deadline: Thursday 26th March 2026, 17:00 GMT.
SPEAK RUSSIAN WITH CONFIDENCE BEFORE YOUR YEAR ABROAD
You already know more Russian than you think. Steppe with Confidence helps year abroad students stop freezing in everyday situations so they can handle real life in Russian-speaking destinations with confidence.

I help Russian Studies students turn academic Russian into practical speaking skills and cultural understanding, so they can arrive abroad feeling confident rather than anxious, isolated, or stuck in an English-speaking bubble.
Steppe with Confidence is an online programme for Russian Studies students heading to Central Asia and the Post-Soviet space. Following a steady plan, you'll build practical speaking skills, cultural awareness and overall confidence so that you can arrive ready to participate, connect, and grow (not just ‘get by’).
You might be a Russian Studies student who is:
Preparing for a year abroad in a Russian-speaking destination and wants to make the most of it from the start
Already abroad, but finding yourself stuck in an English-speaking bubble outside class
You might recognise yourself in some of the following:
You’ve done the academic work, but you have a mental block around speaking Russian
You struggle to understand native speakers, and hope it will somehow click on its own
You don’t have a clear, realistic plan for turning study into real communication
You care about doing well in your degree, in the region, and in the opportunities this year could open up
You want to integrate locally, but you’re unsure what everyday life will actually look like

I help Russian Studies students turn their academic study into practical, usable Russian - so they can arrive abroad prepared, confident, and ready to take part in everyday life.
Over five months, Steppe with Confidence gives you a clear structure and steady support. Instead of trying to prepare for everything at once, you focus on what actually matters, in the order you’ll need it.
By the time you leave for your year abroad destination, you will:
follow native speakers more easily and respond appropriately in everyday conversations
understand how daily life works, culturally and socially
know how to handle over 20 essential situations without freezing or avoiding them
That includes practical moments like avoiding taxi scammers, buying a SIM card, finding a flat, ordering food, or even interacting in the classroom.
This is all connected to a bigger goal: helping you connect, integrate and properly grow during your year abroad.
You don’t need to be at C2 level or an unapologetic extravert.
You don’t need to be fearless.
You just need a supportive structure, realistic expectations, and the willingness to show up consistently.

Millie went from struggling with speaking to starting her year abroad with confidence
Millie C., Russian and French Studies Student
"Working with Matt really helped me to improve the parts of my Russian where I felt less confident...
Matt is a patient and understanding teacher and I’ve never felt scared to try and fail and make mistakes in front of him. The structure of Matt’s lessons really helped me to work on my speaking (something I used to previously struggle with) in a comfortable environment alongside learning new vocabulary and grammatical structures.
The structure of the course was very dynamic and easy to fit into my schedule. The videos were not only really helpful from a language point of view but very practical as well. Having a live session with Matt at the end of the week not only allowed me to clear up any questions that I had about the week's work, but also helped to cement my knowledge of what I had been working on.
The course made me feel a lot more comfortable in my use of everyday Russian in everyday situations that you will encounter in Central Asia. It was a fantastic opportunity to go beyond the university curriculum and develop a more practical command of the Russian language."
